Fiorentina put 3 past Juventus to end their unbeaten run

Juventus have been hot and cold so far this season, and that explains why despite having no losses leading up to the Fiorentina game, they were seven points behind league leaders, AC Milan in fourth. The Old Lady are tied with Parma for most draws so far this season (6). However, they just came off a solid 4-goal performance against Parma Calcio and were expected to roll over a Fiorentina side with only 2 wins leading up to the game, none of which had come away from home.

The writings were on the wall right from the third minute when a certain Frank Ribery found Dusan Valhovic, who lifted the ball over an out-rushing Szczęsny with ease. But that wasn’t the only drama in the opening minutes. In the eighteenth minute, Juan Cuadrado received a straight red for a flagrant foul on Gaetano Castrovilli.

Juventus bossed the remainder of the first half and most of the second despite being a man down. But all that would be in vain when a rare Fiorentina counter led to Alex Sandro bundling the ball into his own net off a cross from Cristiano Biraghi.

That would not be the last we saw of Biraghi, who once again found himself in space down the left-hand side and put in a peach of a cross which was met by former Juventus boy, Martin Caceres.

For Fiorentina, it is the perfect Christmas present; the victory sees them move 5 points clear of a relegation spot and up to the fifteenth in the standings for now.

For Juventus, they have ended the year in the worst possible fashion, and this should be a wake-up call. They are yet to impose themselves as the best team in the league, a title they have held for nine consecutive seasons. And between an excellent AC Milan team and an Inter Milan team without European engagements for the rest of the year, ten in a row is beginning to look less likely.
