Ings early goal keeps Liverpool winless in 3 games

A lot of hype surrounded the match buildup. Liverpool had dropped points in two consecutive games and besides that, two hit men in Sadio Mane and Danny Ings would be facing their former clubs. More noise was even made when the team lineups were released and Jurgen Klopp went into the game with no actual Centre Back despite having iotuons on the bench. He went for a Jordan Henderson and Fabinho pairing instead. The early minutes of the match lived up to the hype as Danny Ings scored from a Ward Prowse freekick after Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold mistimed his clearance hereby giving Ings more than enough time to aim for the far corner of the post for his goal.

In a game riddled by errors and mistakes, Southampton remained almost perfect, rendering Liverpool toothless in attack and reducing them to half chances. As a matter of fact it took Liverpool 75 minutes to muster up their first shot on target; a tame shot by Sadio Mane who currently holds the record for the fastest EPL hat-trick – 2 minutes, 36 seconds. Southampton always looked deadly on the break and despite the first half substitution of the menacing Djenepo, who made a mess of Arnold all through his stay in the game, Liverpool’s defence didn’t look like they were going to step up to the threat.

Mistimed tackles, misjudged looseballs characterized the game and Southampton could have gone two up when a Allison went out of his line to clear a long ball but Valery, who did a good job of hitting the ball on target despite the fact that he had the challenge of an on rushing goalkeeper didn’t hit the ball with enough power and although Valery’s shot went past Allison, it didn’t go into the net.

Southampton are now the first team in EPL history to win 7 EPL Champions while they were Champions. Liverpool ended the game with just 1 shot on target. The last time they didn’t muster more in an EPL game was in their 3-0 loss to Watford last season. Southampton are now up to 6th in the table and Liverpool are still 1st although, they’ve played a game more than United who are second.
