Ole’s tricky reds climb to the top of Premier League table

Having been largely underwhelming in important fixtures this season, United faced the uphill task of not having to lose away at the Turf Moor in order to be the outright leaders of the Premier League table. Burnley, having begun to find their footing in the league and  welcomed United who are currently unbeaten in the League this season. They came up against United in the first half, quite unusual for a Burnley team and were solid in the defence with the agility of Mee and Tarkowski as enough surety of a protected defence.

United found it difficult to create chances and the few they created were squandered. Anthony Martial was particularly guilty of losing a gilt edged chance he got from a beautiful Matic through pass. United found chances hard to come by and they eventually thought they had gone one goal ahead from a Maguire header but the goal was controversially ruled out by referee Kevin Friend after Maguire was adjudged to have committed a foul on his way to leaping for the ball.

Moments earlier, there had been another controversy after Brady, being the last man had fouled Cavani who was almost through on goal after a lofted pass from Bruno left him with one man to beat. Brady was immediately shown the yellow card by the referee. However, the referee, while reviewing the Video footage found out that Shaw had committed a foul in the buildup and United went from hoping to complete the game playing against ten men to defending a freekick just outside their box.

In what was largely a one sided affair, Burnley were effectively resolute in defence until Rashford found Pogba with a lofted cross and Pogba, who was in the edge of the box had his beautifully taken volley defected into the net.

Burnley opened up moments after and they kept united at bay up until the last moment of the game. That won’t matter now as United will be traveling to Anfield on Sunday as the league toppers. Moreso, being league toppers in a new year for the first time since 2013 when they last won the league.
