The old saying that offence wins you games but defence wins you championships continues to prove true. Whether it is Liverpool making what has to be the most important signing in its history when they secured Virgil Van Dijk or Manchester City reviving their season with the signing of Ruben Dias, one can say a really good defender is a priceless commodity in every team.

Anel Ahmedhodzic seems to be a defender trending in the right direction and with the current market situation, this is a rare chance to get a young defender with his best days ahead of him for a bargain price. Ahmedhodzic is currently valued at €3M by transfermarkt.com but the big 21 year old not only plays beyond his valuation but his age too. Ahmedhodzic is built like a rock. His 6ft 4in frame makes him favorite on all ariel duels and at just 185lbs he’s light on his feet and can keep up with the best of them. One of his best traits is his ball playing ability. He is very calm in possession and can step into midfield with the ball when necessary. He doesn’t have the Bonucci long range diagonal pass ability yet, but he is calm enough in possession to make the right decision after winning the ball back and that will be useful in transition. His ability on the ball allows him to play either on the left or right center back position and he is also very comfortable in the defensive midfield position leading to comparisons with Westham stud Declan Rice. He is far from the finished product though. Playing in the Swedish league doesn’t really make him an attractive prospect because of the lack of high quality players he faces there and while his slender frame means he is slightly quicker than a typical man his size, there will be questions about his ability to handle the physicality of the top European leagues.

Ahmedhodzic made his debut for Nottingham Forest coming on in the 84th minute. That unfortunately would be his only appearance for the team. In 2018 he would complete a move to Swedish giants Malmo and there his stock would rise tremendously. His play eventually earned him a call up to the Swedish national team. A deal with Chelsea last summer (€7.5M) reportedly broke down and this summer, he has attracted attention from more clubs. There have been no official bids put in by the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea but the club is said to be in advanced talks with Atalanta as per Fabrizio Romano.

So, who is Anel Ahmedhodzic? He is a big, strong defender whose ability on the ball means he is versatile enough to play multiple positions on the field. He is a young, inexpensive buy and most importantly he has the potential to be a franchise changing player.
