Abdulsalam Kehinde stars as Coach Dunga’s side cruise to victory

Abdulsalam Kehinde, Sanctuary Strikers Wing Back was just too hot for everyone to handle as he mesmerized even his coach in a performance that saw him score two goals and create numerous big chances. Rising Stars FC, at the back of a 3-3 draw against Redeemers FC in their first game had a lot to think about after Redeemers FC walloped Diamond Stars FC on Matchday 2.

Having lost by 9 goals on Matchday 1, Coach Tunde of Diamond Stars FC who before the game and after the game claimed he was proud of his boys took the coward’s way out and failed to turn up for Matchday 2. As a matter of fact, only 6(one of who got injured) of the team of 13 players turned up. The Redeemers had a field day, securing a 6-0 win despite playing just a half of the game.

Highlights: Redeemers FC vs Diamond Stars FC

Knowing that they needed to win, the Rising Stars put up a spirited performance but the Sanctuary Strikers were too good on the day. Captain Ezekiel Kelechi and the Bailly-like Mueez had a field day nullifying almost everyone of the brilliant attack attempts of the Rising Stars. The Rising Stars defenders put up a flawless display, rendering Adetoso Feranmi utterly insignificant in the game and giving No 10 John Kehinde no time for magic.

Ogunleye Mubarak a.k.a Small Doctor was perhaps the only glimmer of hope for the Sanctuary Strikers and his impact was felt when he won a freekick close to the midfield in the middle of the first half. Ezekiel Kelechi had stood over it but the Coach barked instructions at Kehinde Abdulsalam to hit the ball which he did to get the ball in the net for the first goal.

Sanctuary Strikers Second goal came in similar fashion. Ogunleye Mubarak fouled again, this time after a pass from Abioye Quadri, as he is closer to the box. Adetoso Feranmi who is a close-up freekick specialist made no mistake as he directs the ball to the top left corner.

The Rising Stars defenders had been utterly effective and they really could have gone the game without conceding any goal had the freekicks not happened. They however fell apart as the Sanctuary Strikers gave them a feel of the “tiki-taka ”football they’d always been known to play. Adetoso Feranmi, Ogunleye Mubarak, John Kehinde and Adulsalam Kehinde combined to split the Rising Stars defence, making them fall like a pack of cards.

The intelligence of the Rising Stars last man however sends John Kehinde back and he passes the ball to Abioye Quadri and he is brought down. AbdulSalam Kehinde takes the freekick again and he whips it into the far post, from the reach of the goalkeeper, or anyone for that matter.

As the game went on, it was apparent that although events were tilting into the Sanctuary Strikers’ favour, both teams were not at their best as the Rising Stars defence was resolute. Their chance came later in the game when they won a freekick of their own. AbdulSalam Kehinde this time, the culprit brings down Hakeem Toheeb who had just received an inch perfect pass from Adebayo Marvelous-the midfield Maestro.

Marvellous whoops his freekick into the net to try to kick start the process of bringing parity into the game. Later, in the game, Olalere Yusuf gets a chance to reduce the deficit when Small Doctor fouled Adebayo Marvellous at the edge of the box. Yusuf’s well taken freekick beats everyone except the post as he holds up his head in disbelief and pain.

Both teams huffed and puffed but there was nothing more to be done. The game ended 3-1 in favour of the Sanctuary Strikers. They are off to the Semi Finals but they have to meet Redeemers FC in what is not a so dead rubber game as they have to know who tops the group. The Rising Stars FC coach has resigned to the loss as he thinks nothing can be done about his team at the moment seeing that whooping boys Diamond Stars FC may not show up for the last game of the group stage.
