Stoke City ex-captain Ryan Shawcross retires from football after 16 years and pursues a coaching career

Ryan Shawcross, a former Stoke captain, has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old suffered a season-ending back injury in August while playing for David Beckham’s Inter Miami and has opted to retire from football after a 16-year career.

‘Despite the fact that I had to end my playing career due to injury, my enthusiasm for the game remains intact, and I am looking forward to pursue a career in coaching now that I have obtained my coaching licenses,’

Shawcross, who joined Stoke from Manchester United in January 2008 following a loan stint, told intermiamifc.com.

‘I would want to express my gratitude to the entire Inter Miami CF organization and fan base for the chance to come here, as well as to the Stoke City fans for their support.

‘Last but not least, I want to express my gratitude to my wife and children for serving as pillars throughout my life.’
