Super Eagles defender Ola Aina speaks on penalty incident against Sudan

The former Fulham defender conceded a penalty, denying the Super Eagles a clean sheet in their victory versus Jediane’s Falcons.

Ola Aina confessed it was discouraging to watch Nigeria lose their clean sheet at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations due to a penalty conceded.

Nigeria were on set to extend their unbeaten start in Group D on Saturday, when they seized a three-goal lead over Sudan.

Nigeria took the lead with Samuel Chukwueze just three minutes, then Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead in the 45th minute.

After a minute after the halftime, Moses Simon gave Nigeria a dominating lead. At that time, all that mattered was how many goals the Super Eagles scored.

However, against the flow of play, Aina committed a penalty for an unnecessary challenge. The referee initially missed it, but it was later granted following a VAR review.

Although Nigeria eventually won, the former Chelsea defender confessed it was frustrating to watch the squad blow a clean sheet.

“Yes, we blew a clean sheet,” Aina said to the Super Eagles’ media team.
Aina confessed his error but stated that he was focused on the ball and not the player.

“What occurred was that I wasn’t paying attention to the player. Obviously, I held his shirt a little bit, but there is usually some shirt holding in the box, and I was simply watching the ball.

“I was unaware that I had trodden on his foot.”

Additionally, the 25-year-old stated he understood why the referee awarded the penalty, despite the fact that it was a soft one.

“I see why they awarded it as a penalty, but the ball was nowhere near me or the man, so I’m not sure how it could have been awarded as one.”

“However, in this situation, I understand why they imposed a sentence solely on the basis of what was done,” he continued.
