Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, talked to Movistar following his team’s 2-0 victory over Athletic Club on Sunday in the Spanish Supercopa.
“Winning this award means a great deal to me,” Perez explained. “We’re at the start of a new period with a coach who is familiar with us, a defense we’ve changed, and results that have been positive up to this point,” he added.
And he continued, “We’re pleased and enthusiastic about finding a new route that is successful, which is exactly what we intended.”
Madrid’s victory over Athletic featured two handball penalties, one for each team. Los Blancos’ Karim Benzema converted, while the Basque side’s Raul Garcia missed.
“I never speak negatively about referees,” Perez stated.
He singled out Marcelo, Courtois, and Modric on an individual level: “Marcelo is a legend, a Madrid icon who came to the United States as an 18-year-old. I’m glad he received that ovation when he came on tonight in a country with a strong football culture and a large number of Madridistas.”
He stated the following about Courtois and Modric: “Without intending to brag, they are both the finest in their respective fields. Modric is deserving of another Ballon d’Or.”
[9:29 a.m., January 17, 2022] Madrid break an 18-month trophy drought by winning the Spanish Supercopa
Real Madrid broke an 18-month trophy drought on Sunday, defeating Athletic Club 2-0 in Saudi Arabia to win the Spanish Supercopa.
It had been 549 days since Madrid last won silverware, the 2019-20 LaLiga title, but Luka Modric and Karim Benzema’s goals helped them return to the trophy cabinet.
On July 16, 2020, Madrid defeated Villarreal in the Estadi Alfredo Di Stefano to win the 2019-20 LaLiga. Madrid, led at the time by Zinedine Zidane, had won ten consecutive games before the league was suspended due to the epidemic.
Madrid has won nothing since. They finished without a trophy in 2020-21, with Sunday’s Supercopa victory putting an end to a mini-drought compared to recent seasons.
Madrid has won the Supercopa 12 times. Modric and Benzema scored from the penalty spot, while Thibaut Courtois also emerged as a hero by stopping a late Raul Garcia attempt.
Madrid won the Supercopa for the last time in 2020, defeating Atletico in the final, whereas Athletic won it last season, defeating Barcelona in the Seville final.
This season, Madrid eliminated Barcelona and Athletic defeated Atletico Madrid to reach the final.
