Former Everton Striker is the bookmakers’ favorite to succeed Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney, a former Everton striker, has been projected to take over at Goodison Park following Rafa Benitez’s dismissal.

Rooney, 36, has been a revelation at Derby County, who have struggled in the Championship.

He steered the Rams to safety on the penultimate day of his first season in command, and they are now eight points out of the playoffs despite administration, a transfer embargo, and a 21-point deduction.

Duncan Ferguson, another Toffees icon, is second favourite at 7/2, while Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is 4/1 to return for a second term as Everton manager in Betfair’s next permanent Everton manager market.

Benitez was fired on Sunday, less than seven months after taking the helm.

In June, the Toffees chose the 61-year-old former Liverpool manager as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.

Everton, who were defeated 2-1 by Norwich City on Saturday, have won just one of their previous 13 Premier League games and now sit 16th in the league, six points clear of the relegation zone.

The club said it will provide an update on a permanent successor in due course.

Additionally, Sky Sports says that Rooney would have a difficult time declining the Everton position.

‘Rafa Benitez’s time with the Toffees was everything but sweet, and following a humiliating defeat to bottom-of-the-table Norwich yesterday, the club have announced his departure.

‘When it comes to who may succeed the Spaniard, bettors have made their decision clear: one of Everton’s favorite sons, Wayne Rooney, has been put into the 6/5 favourite position from 7/2 just 24 hours ago.

‘Duncan Ferguson is the current second favourite at 7/2, while former Toffees manager Roberto Martinez is also a contender at 4/1. Frank Lampard and Paulo Fonseca have been connected with a number of empty posts this season, and their respective chances of taking over at Goodison Park are 13/2 and 10/1.
