Jose Mourinho reportedly turned down the opportunity to take over as Everton manager following Rafa Benitez’s dismissal.
Everton confirmed the appointment of Duncan Ferguson as caretaker manager recently, but added that a decision on the permanent position will be made ‘in due course.’
Nonetheless, Mourinho had been mentioned as a possible candidate alongside Derby manager Wayne Rooney and ex-Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.
Everton have not yet made contact with Mourinho’s current club Roma, but plan to do so, according to Sky Sports.
Farhad Moshiri is reportedly plotting a bid for the former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham manager in the coming days.
Mourinho, on the other hand, is said to be content in Italy and remains committed to Serie A club Roma.
Although the Portuguese manager is only six months into his three-year contract with Roma, his side are currently seventh in Serie A.
As a result, Roma’s Champions League hopes are dwindling, and fingers are being pointed at Mourinho.
Mourinho, on the other hand, is eager to disprove his critics and catch fifth-place Juventus and sixth-place Fiorentina.
Among the other candidates for the permanent role at Everton are Derby County manager Rooney and former Chelsea manager Lampard.
A product of the Everton academy Rooney, who spent 13 seasons with Manchester United, has been in charge at Derby for just over a year.
The Rams’ fight for survival in the Championship this season has seen them collect 13 of the last 15 available points – they are presently eight points away of safety in 23rd position.
Lampard was Derby County’s manager during the 2018-19 season, during which they were defeated play-off finalists, before taking over at Chelsea the following summer. He was laid off in January 2021 and has been jobless since.
Roberto Martinez, the Belgium head coach who was in charge at Goodison Park from 2013 to 2016, has also been mentioned in the race to succeed Benitez.
Everton were prepared to consider Martinez combining the two roles until at least the summer, according to reports. However, such a scenario was deemed unsuitable for the Belgian national team.
