Watford close to completing the signing of Nigerian winger Samuel Kalu

Watford are closing in on an agreement to sign Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu for £3.5 million. The 24-year-old Nigerian is scheduled to undergo a physical on Wednesday before agreeing to a four-and-a-half year contract with the club.

Watford first downplayed ties with the former Gent flier when he missed training last week amid speculation of a possible bid. However, discussions have resumed and an agreement is on the verge of being reached.

The Nigeria international has 13 caps and two goals for his country and will become Watford’s fourth January acquisition, following Samir, Hassane Kamara, and midfielder Edo Kayembe.

All three started for boss Claudio Ranieri’s team against Newcastle United on Saturday, which they drew 1-1.

Kalu raised eyebrows in August when he fainted in the first minutes of Bordeaux’s match against Marseille, only to subsequently explain that he was alright and attributed the incident to a ‘dizzy period’.

Meanwhile, Watford are attempting to get a work visa for Colombian signing Yaser Asprilla following his formal move from Envigado.

The youngster became the country’s second youngest player on Sunday, when he made his debut against Honduras at the age of 18 years and 58 days.

Although Asprilla might yet be sent out, he is regarded as a promising youngster. Although his relocation was agreed upon in August, it could not be finalized until this month.
